Sarah's Hate List, Volume 7: Work Edition

Monday, August 4, 2008
I went to Richmond with my dad on Saturday morning. There was nothing out-of-the-ordinary about this trip, except for a bunch of near-accidents such as the following:

1. A girl in the Tim Horton's Drive-Thru threw her car into reverse and gunned it for no reason and came to a stop about an inch from my dad's car and only because he slammed down on the horn.
2. An old man driving a huge van whipped out right in front of us in a parking lot when we had the right-of-way. Had my dad not stopped, he would have driven right into the side of my dad's car.
3. A mini-van pulled out in front of us from a gas station and then slammed on her brakes while in the road having realized she pulled out in front of us.
4. A girl drove through a parking lot at about 45 miles per hour and cut right between my dad's car and another parked car as I was getting out of the car and had I not stopped and pulled the door shut, she would have taken the door, and possibly me, out. I don't know know why she felt the need to drive right between the only 2 cars in the huge parking lot.

All of this happened in about 20 minutes, too. So in honor of surviving that, I am dedicating this hate list to all the stupid things done out there by drivers. I know that nobody is a perfect driver, but the following 20 things have no excuse.

1. People who creep forward at red lights in anticipation of the turn to green. Not only is that amazingly annoying, it makes you look like the most impatient person on the road and probably contributes to quite a few accidents every year. Bonus points if said creeper actually goes through the intersection while the light is still red because they were sure it was green. This really does happen. I've seen it a shockingly high number of times.

2. Drivers from Canada in Port Huron. Normally, I have no problem with Canadian drivers. But in Port Huron, that's a different story. I don't know if they think that they're still in Canada because they're so close or if they just honestly don't think they need to follow any laws here because they won't get tickets or something, but these Canadian drivers account for most of the traffic mishaps I see every day. Whether it's pulling out in front of me, not using a turn signal, thinking that brakes should be reserved for special occasions, using 2 parking spaces for their SUV, or driving 20 miles under the speed limit when the posted speed limit is only 35.

3. People who cop an attitude at others for stopping at yellow lights. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. In fact, the law encourages it.

4. Anyone who at any time fails to use a turn signal. It's really not that hard, and it prevents people behind you from wanting to smash your head into the ground. Get used to it, ok?

5. People who don't use turn lanes. They are there for a reason. They are not there simply to separate directions of traffic. When you need to make a left hand turn, please enter the turn lane. Do not come to a dead stop in the far left or only lane and expect to make your turn from there. Others will become angry with you.

6. On the same note, people who attempt to use turn lanes but don't fully succeed, like when someone enters a turn lane too late and thus only really has their front tires in the lane while their back end sticks out and blocks traffic anyway.

7. People who misuse turn lanes. This could mean people who drive in them for extended lengths to bypass slow or stopped traffic, or people who get into them way too early and then stop because someone else is there needing to make a turn, and then they basically are both blocked because the car who's correct needs to move up farther but the car who's incorrect is blocking them and can't back up.

8. People on bikes. This does not necessarily include people who ride as primary transportation and keep off to the side and with the flow of traffic and what not. This does, however, include children and adults who have no regard for the traffic and act like they are in charge of the road. For instance, I turned onto a road today, and a man on a bicycle was riding right down the middle of the road. We made eye contact and he continued to ride. I stopped, because the only other option was to run him over. He continued biking and went right past my window and gave me a nasty look like I had just taken his rights away or something. Really, guy on flimsy bike? Do you want to challenge me?!

9. Pedestrians. Of any sort. Unless you are crossing in a marked crossing area when my light is red and yours is CLEARLY green/go/whatever-the-symbol-is, then please stay out of the freaking road. In South Carolina, you would be dead. Do not walk out in front of me and then get offended when I do not stop for you or when I give you a mean look. You do not have the right of way. Also, do not stick your head out in the road to view oncoming traffic. Find a crossing area and use it.

10. People who drive through the parking areas of a parking lot instead of through the clearly-marked driving areas. It's not that hard. Please learn the difference.

11. People who fail to look before backing up. I don't know if everyone out there just feels that they are entitled to take back space they previously occupied at any given time without any indication of this, but they do not have this right. Please stop exercising a right that you don't have. As Master Shake said, "You don't own space so stop acting like you do!"

12. Motorcyclists who speed. It's your funeral and I will not feel bad.

13. People who pass on the right when someone is stopped to make a left-hand turn on a one lane road where there is no shoulder for passing on the right. It's illegal and when I stop instead of breaking the law and you honk your horn at me, I want to blow your car up with my mind. I haven't mastered that technique yet, though.

14. Slow drivers on the expressway, people who can not maintain a consistent speed on the expressway even though traffic completely allows for it, and people who fly by at 94 miles per hour. You all need to go back to driving school.

15. People who are inept at merging. This could mean people who don't understand that they need to adjust their speed while merging onto an expressway, or it could mean people who refuse to move over a lane and allow traffic to merge easily, even though the lane on the other side of them is completely empty!

16. Narrow, two-lane road with parallel parking on them, too. Can we say crowded?!

17. Cars with brake lights that malfunction in any way. This could mean that the light burned out and you haven't bothered to fix them, or it could mean that someone broke the cover and you used tape to distract the police from noticing. Either way, when you hit the brakes, nobody knows it and trouble is bound to come swiftly.

18. Other drivers who stare at me at stop lights/any instance where prolonged amounts of stopping is necessary. Leave me alone, creepy!

19. Any driver who does not understand the concept of a 4-way stop, a flashing red light, or a light flashing yellow for one road and red for another. You are going to cause an accident or severely anger the people who avoid you and your accident-causing ways.

20. People who speed up when you try to pass them because they are doing 20 under. Inevitably, once they realize you are next to them and intend on passing them, they gun it and travel at about 10 over the speed limit instead. Moron on the loose!

1. Name dropping. For example, last week I got a number of phone calls from someone claiming that the owner of the company I work for told him to get me to help him out. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But the overall point was that I had not been told to do the work this guy was asking for, nor did I have the time to do the work he was asking for. And I told him such. But, he thought that by telling me that "I talked to Daren and HE said for YOU..." I would shut up and do it. Not so!

2. Working on holidays. What a freaking joke. If you want to be a small business owner who is truly involved, then don't take December 15 through January 3 off of work and only give your employees December 24, 25 and January 1 off. I've worked New Year's Eve before and it's no big deal, but when nobody that we do work for is open...why do we have to be?

3. As discussed earlier this year, interrupting. When I answer the phone, let me say what I have to say before you start talking over me. And if you interrupt me to drop a name, chances are your call will go to voice mail even if the person you are asking for is standing right in front of me.

4. Getting work calls on the weekend and on my personal vacation days. Specifically, getting work calls on Sunday morning during church for something that is going to have to wait until Monday anyway. So really, why bother calling?! Although the best yet was a call at 7:45 am the day after Christmas, which I had taken off, followed by a call at 8:30 to apologize for the fact that someone else had called me. Really? Do these people hear themselves?

5. Other people using my computer.

6. The fact that because of the way vacation hours work here, I will not get a day off of work until probably the end of May.

7. How my scope of work changes depending on what someone wants me to get done.

8. The fact that I'm usually the first one to get here and the last to leave.

9. Responsibility given to me that I did not ask for, was not hired to be responsible for, and am not being paid for.

10. Dress codes not being followed. I am sick of showing up all dressed nicely because it's a Monday, and yet just because it's a Monday that is also a holiday, everyone else is in jeans...or sweats. Seriously.

11. That way that people talk down to you but disguise it to be more like giving you unrequested advice.

12. The fact that people judge me because I don't eat at all the expensive places around here. Maybe if I was making more money I would. But right now, I get paid about a tenth of what you make to do the same work so LEAVE ME ALONE!

13. People asking for my advice on something and then not taking it at all.

14. People expecting me to be okay with having to fix things that result from not taking my advice.

15. Stuff that I don't need/am not responsible for getting put on my desk, and then comments being made about my desk being messy.

16. My name being spelled wrong. Seriously? It's on like every piece of paperwork ever but when you write it down do you really forget the H?!

17. Being asked about my weekend/days off work. It's my personal time. If I want to share what I did with you, I will. But when you ask me, I will probably make something up because obviously I don't care for you to know or I would have already told you. And when I ask you back, it's just for the illusion of politeness.

18. Being asked the same questions over and over again, and giving the exact same answer over and over again, but nobody doing anything about it.

19. People calling/texting/emailing/instant messaging me on their day off. If you aren't here, I shouldn't have to deal with you.

20. Working on huge projects, turning them in, never hearing anything about them, and then being told 4 months later to do the same project again. Because nobody pays attention to what I do.

1. The US Postal Service. It was stupid back in 2004 and it's still stupid now.

2. SC4. For the following reasons:
a) My networking teacher is awesome, thus proving that 95% of OA teachers are horrible.
b) We are not in high school anymore, yet some teachers still choose to treat us like we are. I did not pay for my high school education and so the teachers treated me like a kid. I am paying for my college education and I think the teachers, since I'm paying them to teach me, should show me some respect and not threaten to kick me out of the class just because I don't know what page we are learning about filing on, since I already know my freaking alphabet.

3. Airport security. I understand that it's there to protect me from terrorism but seriously...16 ounces of conditioner is all I can take with me for 14 days of high altitude and humidity?!

4. Bugs. All of them. There is no need for this.

5. The fact that a month ago, gas was just pushing, if not exceeding $3 a gallon (and that's where it needed to be, according to our lovely government) and now, all of the sudden, in the midst of hurricane season, it's $2.38. Idiots.

6. The fact that there are rules for filing. Seriously, if you don't know the alphabet by now, then you probably shouldn't have passed kindergarten and you definitely shouldn't be pursuing a career that requires you to be organized and thorough.

7. Ebay. And since nobody answered my question about it in 2005...who came up with that freakin idea?

8. Teachers who I've had for the past 5 semesters and yet still seem to think that just because I don't write down every word that comes out of their mouth, I must not be learning anything.

9. Teachers who make up grades depending on how they're feeling. If you're going to grade stupid homework assignments that I do during your uber-boring lectures, at least grade everybody's assignment the same way.

10. Spiders. Although this could fit under the "bugs" category, I think they're nasty enough to deserve their own mention.

11. Apple for making iTunes to work the same way with Windows as it does with OS X because that instantly makes it the worst Apple program ever created.

12. The fact that since I got my macbook, Apple has acknowledged 2 problems with macbooks and agreed to fix them both, but both of those problems are not the problem I have been having.

13. The fact that Michigan expressways are some of the most dangerous ones in the country and yet, we have the highest speed limits and are constantly begging for them to be raised even though no one drives under the existing limits.

14. How sometimes you can get a headache that only hurts on one side of your head.

15. How commercials are always like 10 times louder than the TV show you were watching.

16. That Fall TV schedules can't be concrete:
a) We only get 6 episodes of Lost and then we have to wait until February sweeps for the rest of the season?! Who came up with that plan?
b) Scrubs doesn't premiere until mid-season! That's just not fair.

17. How coffee has to taste like dirt, but yet it's quasi-good for you and calorie-free and yet cappuccino is delicious and full of sugar and calories.

18. Wet dogs. They stink. Ammended 9/13/2006 at 5:35 p.m.: Wet dogs aren't as worth hating as the stupid idiots who decided that Pluto wasn't good enough to be a planet. Pluto lives! Who's with me? Anyone?

19. Microsoft. For being communists. Because now that I have a mac and can download awesome open source programs right from apple's web site for free, I truly see how horrible Microsoft is.

20. The US Postal Service. Because my hatred toward them is so great that it needs 2 of the 20 available slots on this year's Sarah's Hate List.

Awe-freaking-some.

19. Tests that were announced for Wednesday but given on Monday.

20. SC4. I HOPE THIS PLACE GETS ATTACKED BY CANADIAN GEESE AND SHUT DOWN FOREVER AND THAT WE ALL GET EVERY PENNY WE'VE EVER SPENT HERE BACK BECAUSE THIS PLACE SUCKS MONKEY BALLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
